Chapter 7

Pure Blood

Drake held me and I could feel the warmth of his body and smell his masculine, comforting scent but it still didn’t seem real to me. I felt like this was all a dream and I would wake to find none of this had ever happened. I had given up on love a long time ago. When I was young, I had dreamed of the white picket fence, the children, and the dog sometime in my future. I had planned to have children, at least one of each. Most people just assumed I had become too career oriented and given up one dream for another. That couldn’t be further from the truth.

“We’ve not really talked much about our pasts or our future,” Drake whispered in my ear.

“That’s because you’re a horny wolf and whenever we get this close all that’s on your mind is sex,” I replied.

“Mm, so you’re blaming me?”

“If it howls, it’s a wolf…”

“I get your point,” he said with a gleam of amusement in his eyes. “Why don’t we sit down and talk now then?” He led me to a couch in his room, sat down, and pulled me into his lap. I felt safe and comfortable there. “Who should start?”

“Ask me a question.”

“Why hasn’t some male snapped you up before now?”

I felt the tears come to my eyes. How could it still hurt after so long? “I was engaged once, many years ago.” He nodded trying to encourage me. “I was young, I had just completed my bachelor’s degree.”

“What was it in?”

“English lit, I loved reading. He was my professor and all the girl’s loved him. He was gorgeous, not as attractive as you are, but for a human he was something else. I thought I was completely in love, but I didn’t really know him, I only thought I did.” I hesitated, I wasn’t sure how to proceed.

“Go on, Sweetheart. It’s all in the past and it can’t hurt you anymore.”

If only that were true. “I went to see him one day. It was right after class and I had some good news. I went early so we could go celebrate. I hadn’t had any luck finding a job in my field, but I’d met a photographer willing to pay me for a shoot. I was so excited. I only intended to model until I got a teaching job or work with a publisher. I never saw it coming.”

“What happened?” he urged softly.

“I walked into his classroom like I had a hundred times before. He was there with a woman and she had a baby in her arms and two little toddlers hanging on to her. They were cute and I thought she was a student. Sometimes students with kids have issues and he would usually help them as much as he could.”

“But she wasn’t a student?”

“No, there I stood wearing my engagement ring, proud as hell. But she trumped me, she was wearing her wedding ring and she was married to him. She realized immediately who I was.
